Anyone read this? Time travellers venture back to the peaceful pliocene to find an exotic race already in control of the era. It leads to the Galactic Milieu Trilogy by way of a book called the Intervention.
It is one of my favourite series entwining some mythology and speculation with a great story full of twists and turns.

You read right to the end - Magnificat? Or do you mean the end of the quartet in which case you NEED to read Intervention (might have been 2 books in the States iirc) and then the Galactic Milieu Trilogy. Jack the Bodiless Diamond Mask Magnificat.
