Black Jewels Trilogy and assorted novels and short stories Others - currently 2 books. This author has a brilliant eye for characterisation and scene setting. She isn't afraid to call a spade a spade and get down to the nitty gritty dirt dealings of power struggles and although many of her protagonists are female she is not afraid to have female evil doers. Highly recommended. |

I mostly agree. I think one of Anne Bishop's weaker points is her villains; most of them appear to have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and they are usually far less interesting than their good counterpart. Still, the Black Jewels trilogy is indeed highly recommended. The follow-up stories that feature the same protagonists are mostly worth reading because it's nice to encounter the same nice people, but the stories themselves aren't that good, in my opinion; the (three) other novels that are set in the same world are much better (but still fall short of the heights of the Black Jewels trilogy). I thought the Tir Alainn trilogy was also a bit disappointing, in part because there was so much potential for interesting antagonists that went unused, and in part perhaps also because my expectations were set to high. |

I suppose I agree, her bad guys are just bad guys, but I actually like that Her good characters are much better written I think, they are flawed and striving to be noble. The short stories are good, they provide some insight into situations - how Lucivar came to marry Marian etc. My daughter refuses to read Twilight's Dawn because it is the 'end' I cried but loved it. Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady are my two go to books - I get the urge and have to read them. Seeing Grey develop is a wonderful pick-me-up I read Tir Alainn and enjoyed but didn't love it. The new series 'The Others' has great potential, I read the first book 4 or 5 times last year. But I think you might find the bad guys one dimensional again ... |
