How is it that I never read this before?

I bought the whole series for my daughter for Christmas, and she never really got into it. Well, now that I have a 45-minute bus ride to work, each way, and I've blow through The Final Dark, Lord of the Rings, and the Last of the Mohicans, I was looking for something new to read. Flash forward and I stole my daughter's Christmas present from her (really borrowed, OK? I'm not a monster, after all).

I had a good deal of air travel recently, and about a 5 hour layover at MSP, so I pulled it out and started reading. The Guide to the Guide was absolutely hilarious, and the rest of the book to be, not only simarly hilarious, bit also thoroughly entertaining. I also know why my daughter never really quite got into it; it seems to be particularly up my proverbial alley, being that my college studies were heavy in philosophy and mathematics (when I wasn't holding a human brain or tracing the pathways of the twelve cranial nerves out of the skull of a cadaver, that is).

Every page I read it like another journey into the recesses of my subconscious. I always find something new that resonates particularly strongly with myself.

I know, I know. I'm really late arriving to this party.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Hitchhiker's Guide. :) Probably one of the greatest Sci-fi/comedy books ever written. (Okay, so by Mr. Adams's admission, it's a "trilogy in five parts".)

If you have the Omnibus Edition (black leather-clad, all five volumes in one), you'll get the bonus story "Young Zaphod Plays it Safe".

Also, you may be interested in the official sequel, And Another Thing... that "fixes" the ending of the fifth book. I haven't had the time to tackle this, but it's on my bookshelf waiting for me. :) It was written with the express consent/authorization by the Adams family.

Put it at the top of the list. It's worth it.

I'd like to post some excerpts for you, but just have no idea where to begin; there are so many lines that just have me smiling and not saying anything like a madman on the bus....

" In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

Right now I'm on the third book. Just finished the second this morning. I flipped the page, saw the title of the third, scratched my head, flipped to the previous page and said to myself "did this one just end?" Lol
